DECR Communication Service, 28/09/2026
The Russian Orthodox Church continues to provide humanitarian aid to people affected by Cyclone Gezani. The tropical cyclone had hit eastern Madagascar last year, causing enormous damage to local population.
On 23rd September 2026, with the assistance of benefactors of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, people affected by the natural disaster, including many parishioners of the Russian Orthodox Church’s communities in the country, received blankets, school kits and toys for children, the Exarchate website reports.
The aid was distributed among 180 families in the Mahanoro Municipality and the city of Toamasina. Acting there are parishes of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa. Priest Seraphim Zafilahi, rector of the local parishes, coordinated the relief efforts.
