Orthodox chapel restored at Christian cemetery in Morocco’s capital
DECR Communication service, 22.09.2026
The restoration of an Orthodox chapel-tomb at the Christian cemetery in Rabat, Morocco, where dozens of Russian compatriots are buried, has been completed. The work was carried out with the assistance of the Russian House and the parish of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Rabat.
The crypt is the burial place of the founders of the Russian Orthodox community in Morocco: Archimandrite Varsonofiy (Tolstukhin), Archimandrite Mitrofan (Yaroslavtsev), Count Vladimir Alekseevich Ignatiev, Artur Konstantinovich Herzberg, and Alexander Fyodorovich Stefanovsky, according to the website of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa.
In addition, Nina Alekseevna El Kinani, a longtime chanter at the Church of the Resurrection in Rabat and Deputy Chairwoman of the society “Russian Orthodox Church in Morocco,” who reposed in the Lord in August, was recently buried in the chapel. On August 22, 2026, the parish rector, Archpriest Maxim Massalitin, celebrated her funeral service, after which she was buried in the crypt.
