Patriarchal Exarch of Africa Consecrates Newly Built Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Tanzania
On July 23, 2026, during his visit to Tanzania, Metropolitan Konstantin of Cairo and North Africa, Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, performed the rite of the Lesser Consecration of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Kimamba (Kilosa District, Morogoro Region) and celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the newly consecrated church.
The church was built with the support of benefactors of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa.
Concelebrating with the archpastor were Priest Georgy Maksimov, chairman of the Exarchate’s Missionary Department; Archimandrite Philaret (Kimaro), dean of the Central Deanery of Tanzania; Priest Lawrence Sakwa, rector of the church; and clergy of the deanery. Metropolitan Konstantin awarded Fr. Lawrence Sakwa the right to wear the nabedrennik. At the conclusion of the service, the Metropolitan addressed those present with an archpastoral homily, the Exarchate’s Telegram channel reports.
The Exarch presented the parish with altar covers, an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and a green priestly vestment. All the faithful also received small icons of St. Nicholas and pectoral crosses as gifts.
Later that day, Metropolitan Konstantin chaired a general meeting of the clergy of the Central Deanery of Tanzania. During the meeting, current issues concerning the development of the Russian Orthodox Church in the country were discussed. Also taking part in the discussion was Priest Georgy Maksimov, chairman of the Missionary Department of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, who presented and distributed to the clergy copies of a prayer book, a concise Book of Needs (Trebnik), and other Orthodox literature in Swahili prepared by the Apostle Mark Spiritual and Educational Center of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the archpastor presented the clergy with commemorative gifts. In addition, with the support of benefactors from Russia, each priest received a motorcycle for pastoral and missionary work.
