Parishioners of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nice undertake pilgrimage to the relics of St. Martha, sister of St. Lazarus of the Four Days
DECR Communication Service, 28/04/2026
On 25th April 2026, the eve of the commemoration day of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women, the clergy and parishioners of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nice went on a pilgrimage to Tarascon to venerate the relics of the Holy Righteous Myrrh-Bearing Martha of Bethany, sister of St. Lazarus of the Four Days and Mary.
In the crypt of the Catholic Church of St. Martha in Tarascon, they celebrated the Divine Liturgy. Serving as the altar in the crypt is the tomb (marble sarcophagus) of the Holy Myrrh-Bearer. Installed atop St. Martha’s grave, it dates back to the early 4th century. The church legend has it that her disciples – first Christians in the town – buried St. Martha in the house she used to live in, and it became the first place of Christian worship.
Celebrating the Divine Liturgy at St. Martha’s relics was Archpriest Andrei Yeliseyev, rector of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nice. His con-celebrant was Protodeacon Ioann Buzdugan. The St. Nicholas Cathedral choir performed liturgical hymns.
Among those who took part in the pilgrimage were Orthodox Christians from other cities and towns in the south of France. After the Liturgy, all pilgrims venerated St. Martha’s relics, website of the Korsun Diocese reports.
