An Orthodox cross has been installed at the Debrecen Memorial Military Cemetery in Hungary
DECR Communication service, 03.11.2025.
On November 1, 2025, a memorial ceremony for the installation of a tombstone Orthodox cross was held by the Russian Consulate General in Debrecen at the World War I memorial cemetery, which holds the remains of 1,618 servicemen of the Russian Empire and its allies. The cross was made and donated by the residents of the village of Novaj (Heves region, Hungary).
The Debrecen Memorial Military Cemetery, restored in 2015 with the assistance of the Russian Federation, the local municipality, and concerned citizens of Hungary, is the final resting place for soldiers who were captured in the battles in Galicia and on the Carpathian front and were held in an internment camp for military personnel. In the summer of 1915, an epidemic of cholera broke out in the camp due to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, claiming the lives of hundreds.
The event was attended by the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Debrecen, K.L. Drachevsky, the Mayor of Novaj, G. Demko, staff of the diplomatic mission and their family members, representatives of the compatriots' organization "Russian-Hungarian Society of Debrecen," and residents of the eastern regions of Hungary.
The cleric of the Church of St. Nicholas the Miracle-Worker in Tokaj, Priest Stefan Szegedi, performed the rite of consecration of the cross and served a memorial service (litiya) for the departed. Afterwards, the ceremony participants laid flowers at the obelisk to the fallen and lit candles on the graves in memory and respect for the fallen heroes.
