Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol: My refusal to acknowledge the OCU is a matter of conscience and canons of the Church
Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol, a hierarch of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, does not consider Epifaniy Dumenko. head of the OCU, the schismatic structure functioning in Ukraine, to be the canonical primate of the Church in Ukraine. As Romfee.gr, Greek Orthodox website, informs, His Eminence said that in his interview to EDITION F.
Metropolitan Athanasios noted that he did not agree with the Primate of the Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostom, who acknowledged Epifaniy Dumenko as the canonical primate of the Church in Ukraine; for this “acknowledgement” happened without any notice and consent of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus.
At the same time, the archpastor stressed that his attitude is not dictated by personal preferences, since he has never met with either His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufriy or Epifaniy Dumenko. “It was a matter of conscience, respect for the holy canons of the Church”, Metropolitan Athanasios said.
