First Orthodox Liturgy celebrated in the Philippine city of Baguio
DECR Communication Service, 28/09/2026
On 26th September 2026, Feast of the Dedication of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Jerusalem, the first Orthodox Divine Liturgy took place in the city of Baguio on the island of Luzon, the Philippines. It was celebrated by Hieromonk John (Gondayao), Rector of the Parish of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God in Manila.
As the website of the Philippines and Vietnam Diocese reports, Baguio is known as the summer capital of the Philippines. The largest city in northern Luzon, it is located high in the mountains and therefore has comfortable temperature during the hot months of March, April and May (the Philippine summer), attracting numerous tourists coming there to admire beautiful mountainous landscape.
Attending the divine service were local residents and foreigners living in the city and its vicinity, reports the Telegram channel of the Patriarchal Exarchate of South-East Asia.
“We hope this marks the beginning of a new community in the north of the Philippines’ largest island,” Father John noted.
The Liturgy was followed by a communal repast, during which all those present had an opportunity to talk with the priest.
