Communications Service of the DECR, 07.06.2006.
On 7th June 2026 on the Sunday of All Saints, festivities were held at the Church of Christ’s Resurrection in the capital of Tunis on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the church. The church was consecrated on 10th June 1956 by Saint John (Maximovich), archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco. The jubilee festivities had been transferred to the nearest weekend.
On this day the Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Church of Christ’s Resurrection. The service was headed by the rector of the Church of the Holy Apostle Philip in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates archimandrite Alexander (Zarkeshev) and the rector of the Church of Christ’s Resurrection in Tunis archpriest Dimitry Netsvetaev with deacon Alexy Kostin concelebrating. The hymns at the Liturgy were sung by the parish choir.
Praying in the church were the parishioners of the community of the Russian Orthodox Church in Tunis. Among the participants was the wife of the Russian ambassador to the country I. G. Zolotova.
Placed upon the altar of the sanctuary of the church was an icon of Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco as a gift from the community of Saint Mark the Apostle to mark the seventieth anniversary of the Church of Christ’s Resurrection in the United Arab Emirates.
At the Litany for the Departed archimandrite Alexander commemorated all the reposed rectors of the parish in Tunis.
After the communion verse the choir sang the troparion and kontakion to Saint John of Shanghai. At the conclusion of the Liturgy the priests brought the icon of Saint John out of the sanctuary into the middle of the church and celebrated the office for the blessing of holy water.
There then took place a procession of the cross around the church at which the priests sprinkled the faithful with holy water. In his homily archimandrite Alexander (Zarkeshev) congratulated the parishioners on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the church, while archpriest Dimitry spoke on the history of the construction of the church in Tunis. Deacon Alexy proclaimed the customary ‘Many Years’ at the end of the service.
