DECR Communication Service, 14/10/2026
On 4th – 10th October 2026, the Joint Conference of the World Council of Churches’ Commissions and Reference Groups on Life, Justice and Peace was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Among those who took part in the conference were representatives of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Mrs M.B. Nelyubova and Mr O.R. Kalimullin, who are members of the WCC Commissions on Health and Healing and on Climate Justice and Sustainable Development. The conference took place in Thailand at the invitation of the Christian Conference of Asia and the Church of Christ in Thailand.
Participants in the commissions meetings and general plenary sessions discussed the WCC’s activities in conference-related areas, action plans for a period in the run-up to the next WCC Assembly, as well as various topics pertaining to promotion of inter-Christian cooperation.
Special focus was made on the history of the ecumenical social thought and action, beginning with the 1925 Stockholm Conference on Life and Work. Participants in the conference also addressed various problems in relation to climate crisis, development in the postcolonial era, diakonia, health and healing, racial injustice, the churches’ role in shaping a values-based international order, human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence, and so on.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of a joint message articulating a vision for ecumenical social thought and witness in the present-day context.
