The DECR Chairman Visited Holy Trinity University in Addis Ababa

On June 5, as part of his visit to Ethiopia, Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, visited Holy Trinity University in Addis Ababa, the principal institution of higher learning of the Ethiopian Church.

A meeting took place between the Chairman of the DECR and the faculty and students of the University. Metropolitan Anthony spoke about the history and contemporary development of the external activities of the Russian Orthodox Church and also answered questions fr om professors and students. The Rector of the University, Archbishop Abune Philipos of South Omo, spoke about the structure and activities of the educational institution under his leadership, which was founded in 1942 by decree of Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia.

For more than twenty years (1998–2021), the University was headed by Archbishop Abune Timotheos, a graduate of the Leningrad Theological Academy, wh ere he studied during the same years as the future His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’. Until the end of his life, the hierarch preserved the warmest memories of him.
