Dean of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nice attends commemoration of victims of 2016 terrorist act
On 14th July 2021 on the occasion of the national day of France, the country remembered the victims of the inhumane terrorist act that took place five years ago on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.
In 2016 a truck driven by a terrorist drove into people who were celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade. There were eighty-six victims, eleven of whom were Russian-speaking compatriots, including a church servitor at the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nice.
In the morning of 14th July, the dean of the St. Nicholas Cathedral archpriest Andrei Yeliseyev celebrated a memorial service in the presence of the family members of one of those who dies, the church’s altar server Igor Sheleshko.
Prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the innocently-murdered Orthodox Christians Igor Sheleshko, Natalia Otto, Roman Ekmalian, Tatiana Mukhamedova, Mikhail Bazelevsky, Richard (baptized as George) Krusberg, Victoria Savchenko, Alina Bogdanova and all the victims of the terrorist act.
On the same day the mayor of Nice held a civil commemoration of the victims of the tragedy on la Place Masséna. This year the memorial ceremony was attended by the French prime minister Jean Castex. Apart from the head of government, the mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi and the prefect of the Alps-Maritimes Bernard Gonzales addressed the families of the dead and those who suffered and others in attendance.
Later, all those present, including representatives of Nice’s various faith communities, laid flowers at the temporary memorial to the terrorist victims of 14th July. White doves were released into the skies.
The dean of the St. Nicholas Cathedral Father Andrei Yeliseyev, who was also present at the event, exchanged short greetings and expressions of mutual condolences with the prime minister of France and the mayor of Nice.
