The DECR Chairman Visited the Russian Hospital in the Capital of Ethiopia
DECR Communication service, 05.06.2026.
On June 4, as part of his visit to Ethiopia, Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations, visited the Dejazmach Balcha Russian Red Cross Hospital in Addis Ababa, one of the oldest Russian medical institutions on the African continent.
The Metropolitan was welcomed by the hospital’s director, A.A. Obukhov, who spoke about the history and present-day activities of this medical institution. The DECR Chairman toured the hospital grounds and held a conversation with the medical staff.
The history of Russian medical institutions in Ethiopia dates back to 1896, when the Russian Empire provided assistance to Ethiopia during foreign intervention in that country. At that time, the first hospital in Addis Ababa was established. In 1947, the present hospital was opened. Today it is a multidisciplinary medical institution well known in Ethiopia.
Earlier, Metropolitan Anthony visited Migbare Senay Hospital, which is under the authority of the Ethiopian Church’s Synodal Department for Children and Family Affairs. During both visits, prospects for cooperation between the medical institutions of the Russian and Ethiopian Churches were discussed.
