Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk Visits the Sebeta Monastery in Addis Ababa

On June 4, Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, who is on a visit to Ethiopia, visited the Convent of the Most Holy Theotokos of Gethsemane in Sebeta, a suburb of Addis Ababa. The convent was founded in 1961 by Empress Menen, the wife of the last Ethiopian Monarch, Haile Selassie I, who donated one of her former country residences for the establishment of the monastery. The convent includes a school and an orphanage for girls.

Metropolitan Anthony was welcomed by the abbess and the sisters of the monastery, as well as by the many girls living in the orphanage under the care of the convent.

On behalf of the Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Church, the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church was accompanied by Archbishop Abuna Philipos of South Omo.
