Ceremonial Opening of a Renovated Russian Military Burial Site in Budapest
A memorial service for soldiers of the Great Patriotic War was held at the Óbuda Cemetery in the Hungarian capital

On March 19, a ceremonial opening of a Russian military burial site from the period of the Great Patriotic War took place at the Óbuda Cemetery in Budapest following major restoration work.
As a result of archival research carried out by the Representative Office of the Russian Ministry of Defense for military memorial work in Hungary, the names of 434 out of 660 soldiers buried at this site have been established; the remaining 226 are listed as unknown. All of them fell in the battles for the capture of Budapest in the winter of 1944–1945.
Among those who took part in the ceremony were Colonel A.A. Zarudnev, Military and Air Attaché of Russia; Ambassador of Belarus V.E. Ulakhovich; Ambassador of Kazakhstan A.S. Saparbekuly; Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan T.Ch. Kushchubekov; staff members of the Military History Institute and Museum of the Hungarian Ministry of Defense József Gal and Péter Ajtony Kosaras; Chairman of the Hungarian–Russian Friendship Society György Gilyan; Head of the Representative Office of the Russian Ministry of Defense for military memorial work in Hungary Sh.Y. Mamasoliev; representatives of the Hungarian branch of JSC Atomstroyexport; staff of Russian foreign institutions; students of the school at the Russian Embassy; representatives of the Hungarian Workers’ Party; members of the Aurel Stromfeld Historical Society; Russian journalists; and compatriots living in Hungary.
A memorial service for the fallen soldiers was served by Archpriest Ioann Kadar, rector of the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Budapest, reports the website of the Budapest–Hungarian Diocese.
Those gathered laid flowers at the central obelisk and honored the memory of the fallen heroes with a minute of silence.
