Orthodox book fair opens in Buenos Aires
DECR Communication Service, 16/03/2026
On 14th March 2026, a book fair entitled “The Joy of Word” began its work in the capital of Argentina. The event was organized with the blessing of Bishop Leonid of Argentina and South America and with the assistance of the Russian House in Buenos Aires.
Taking part in the opening ceremony were Bishop Leonid of Argentina and South America; Ms Dina Oyun, Director of the Russian House; and Mr Yu.N. Kuznetsov, Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in Mar del Plata, Partido de Necochea and Bahía Blanca, as well as in the Chubut, Rio Negro and La Pampa Provinces.
In his greeting speech, Bishop Leonid said, in particular: “Dear brothers and sister, the book fair we are opening today is not quite usual for a wider public. On 1st (14th) March 1564, Deacon Ioann Fyodorov printed the first ever book in Russia - The Apostle. To commemorate that event, in December 2009, on the initiative of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and by a decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Day of the Orthodox Book was established, to be celebrated on 14th March. Since the 16th century, great many Orthodox books have been published. The books presented here may interest both adults and children. It is very important to point out that Orthodox literature helps instruct people in spiritual matters, preparing us for eternity. Among such books there is one special book that stands out and is relevant for any historical period and any nation. It is the Gospel, which reflects the living word of Christ. By studying the Gospel and living in accord with its commandments we even here, on earth, become partakers of the Heavenly Kingdom.”
His Grace wished all those present to enjoy reading the Gospel and religious literature and apply the knowledge they gain to their everyday life, Telegram channel of the Diocese of Argentina reports.
The archpastor also thanked the director and staff of the Russian House in Buenos Aires for longstanding cooperation in religious education and answered questions from the audience.
Presented at the book fair, which will be open until 21st March, are liturgical books, as well as books on church history and religious literature for adults and children. It is intended to acquaint the public with the riches of the Orthodox book tradition and emphasize the importance of Orthodox literature in a person’s spiritual life.
