Conference on the Role of an Orthodox Woman in the Church and Society takes place in Cameroon
DECR Communication Service, 16/03/2026
On 7th March 2026, a conference on the Role of an Orthodox Woman in the Church and Society was held at the Life-Giving Trinity Parish in the city of Douala, Western Deanery, Cameroon. The meeting brought together numerous parishioners and guests.
Priest Hermogenes Eloundou opened the conference. In his speech, he reminded all those present about the holy life of the Most Pure Virgin Mary, who had been vouchsafed to become the Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. Father Hermogenes also spoke about the lives of holy women, including Princess Olga and Blessed Matrona of Moscow, which inspire Christian women to serve God and neighbour.
Dean Herman Mbarga spoke about Christian morality in everyday life, in particular, about the importance of preserving the family and bringing up children in the Orthodox faith. “In striving to raise their children to be worthy members of society and the Church, women lay the foundation for the future,” Father Herman said.
Speakers received many questions from the audience. A protestant pastor asked about the role of women in the Russian Orthodox Church and about the differences between the Local Orthodox Churches. Among other topics raised during the conference were the sacrament of confession and guidelines for a young Orthodox girl in today’s media landscape. The answers given by the speakers were grounded in the Patristic tradition of the Orthodox Church, website of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa reports.
A catechist representing a new community in the English-speaking region of the country, expressed his concern over the plight of women in conflict zones and called all those present to pray for and support the afflicted.
A football game between female parishioners followed. A joint repast concluded the day.
