Rector of St. Nicholas Parish in Reykjavík takes part in laying of flowers ceremony on Defender of the Fatherland Day

On February 23rd, when Russia celebrates Defender of the Fatherland Day, staff members of the Russian Embassy in Reykjavík and Russian citizens living in Iceland took part in a ceremony held in the Fossvogur Cemetery in Reykjavík. They laid wreaths and flowers at the Hope Memorial in commemoration of the Arctic Convoys’ sailors who had died during World War II, as well as at the graves of the Great Patriotic War veteran Maria Mitrofanova and Soviet sailor Alexander Malley. The latter died in Reykjavík in 1942.
Archpriest Timofey Zolotusky, rector of St. Nicholas Stavropegic Parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in Reykjavík, celebrated the memorial litiya for the soldiers “who had laid down their life in battle for the freedom and independence of our homeland,” website of the parish reports.
Taking part in the ceremony, among others, was Ms L.G. Rivina, chair of the Coordination Council of the Russian Compatriots’ Associations in Iceland and principal of the Russian Language School. Among those in attendance were also Russian compatriots and citizens of the Icelandic capital.
