DECR Communication Service, 09/08/2024
As of 9th August, the following churches and monastery in the Kursk Diocese were damaged as a result of the shellings by the Armed Forces of Ukraine:
· St. Nicholas Monastery in Gornal (St. Nicholas Church, Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos and other structures, including maintenance buildings);
· Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Guyevo village, Sudzha district, Kursk region;
· Church of St. Theodosius of Chernigov in Popovo-Lezhachi village, Glushkovo district;
· Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Alexeyevka village, Glushkovo district.
At the moment, three priests remain on the spot, unable to evacuate, and there is no possibility to contact them, patriarchia.ru reports.
The city and regional authorities provide temporary accommodation to refugees. People also seek shelter at their relatives’ and friends’ homes. The Kursk Diocese renders assistance to those in need by collecting food packages and clothes and raising money.
Forty refugees have found shelter in the Hermitage (Monastery) of the Kursk-Root “Sign” Icon and the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. The Inter-Diocesan Training Centre for Church Specialists (former Kursk Theological Seminary) provided its building to accommodate 14 people. The Holy Trinity Convent in Kursk gave refuge to 10 people.
The Kursk Diocese has set up a crisis centre to coordinate emergency relief efforts. A team of priests has been formed to minister to the wounded in the Kursk hospitals.
