Metropolitan Daniel of Tokyo and All Japan passes away in the Lord

On August 10, Metropolitan Daniel of Tokyo and All Japan, the Primate of the Japanese Autonomous Orthodox Church, passed away in the Lord at the age of 84.
The future metropolitan was born In Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on September 5, 1938.
He graduated with a degree in French literature from Aichi University in 1962, from Tokyo Orthodox Seminary in 1965, and in 1968 from St.Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in New York, USA, with a master of arts degree in theology.
In November 1969 he was ordained deacon at Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral, presbyter in January 1972 and appointed rector of St. Matthew church in Toyohashi.
On August 20, 1999, he received his monastic tonsure at the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and St. Sergius Lavra with the name of Daniel in honour of the Holy and Right-Believing Prince Daniel of Moscow. On September 6, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II elevated him to the rank of hegumen at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Dormition in the Moscow Kremlin.
On October 6, 1999, Daniel was named Bishop of Kyoto of the Japanese Autonomous Orthodox Church by the decision of the Holy Synod.
On November 11, Archbishop Clement of Kaluga and Borovsk elevated hegumen Daniel to the rank of archimandrite at the Trinity Cathedral of St. Daniel’s stauropegic monastery in Moscow.
On November 13, Archimandrite Daniel was nominated bishop at the Church of All Saints Who Shone Forth in the Land of Russia located at the Patriarchal residence in St. Daniel’s monastery. He was consecrated during Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral Church of the Epiphany in Moscow on November 14. His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia officiated.
Since May 14, 2000, Daniel had been Metropolitan of Tokyo and All Japan, the Primate of the Japanese Autonomous Orthodox Church.
