Prof Dr Thomas Bremer: Freedom of faith stipulates for non-interference of state in ecclesiastical affairs
DECR Communication Service, 10.07.2023.
If Ukraine wants to get closer to Europe, Kiev should recognize the principals of human rights and the freedom of faith, Prof Dr Thomas Bremer, a renowned Catholic theologian, who has taught for decades in the University of Münster, stated in his comments to the German public state-owned international broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW).
“According to our western ideas, the freedom of faith means that the state does not interfere in the international affairs of churches’, the professor said.
According to Prof Bremer, the actions of the Ukrainian authorities against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church are ‘on the brink of violation of the principal of freedom of faith, reports the Union of Orthodox Journalists.
Early in 2023, the German newspapers Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung carried an article by Thomas Bremer and his colleague Regina Elsner on “Religious Intolerance in Ukraine?” The authors recounted the persecutions against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and stated that the religious policy pursued by the Ukrainian authorities “should be promptly corrected”.
