Monument to the Great Patriotic War veteran is consecrated in Iceland

On June 22, the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, flowers were laid at the Reykjavik Fossvogur cemetery to the Hope monument created in commemoration of the Arctic convoys’ sailors. The Candle of Remembrance action was held taking part in which were compatriots living in Iceland, employees of the Russian Embassy and parishioners of the stauropegic parish of the Moscow Patriarchate in the capital of Iceland, website of the parish reports.
H.E. Mikhail Noskov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Iceland, thanked all those who came on a working day to commemorate those killed in action and those who worked on the home front for victory over Nazi Germany. The memory of the fallen during the war was honored by a minute of silence.
Rector of the St. Nicholas parish, Archpriest Timofey Zolotusky celebrated a litiya for the repose of the soldiers who laid down their lives on the battlefield for faith, Fatherland and friends, who were martyred in captivity and died of wounds, and for civilians who met their death in wartime.
Archpriest Timofey consecrated a monument on the grave of Maria Mitrofanova, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. Money for the monument was raised by St. Nicholas parishioners in Reykjavik as part of the Immortal Regiment campaign. This popular initiative has united parishioners from Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ireland who all donated what they could. Special support has been given by iXplorer company, while the Russian Embassy has rendered invaluable assistance in solving logistical issues.
Fr. Timofey addressed those gathered and underscored the importance of keeping prayerful memory about veterans and pass it to the young compatriots living far away from their Motherland.
The participants of the ceremony and the service visited the war graves plot at the Fossvogur cemetery and sang Memory Eternal to Maria Mitrofanova, the Soviet sailor Aleksandr Maley and to all soldiers of the anti-Hitler coalition buried here.
