DECR Communication Service, 11.04.2023.
On April 11, the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate hosted a meeting between DECR Secretary for the far abroad, Archpriest Sergei Zvonarev, and American writer and social activist Suzanne Massie. The representative of the Synodal Department told his guest about the activities of the Church in the sphere of international relations and rapprochement of peoples.
Suzanne Massey, who turned 92 this year, is best known in the United States as a researcher of Russian history and author of several books, including the bestseller Land of the Firebird: The Beauty of Old Russia. Her knowledge of Russian culture and traditions made her an informal adviser to President Reagan on the Soviet Union. S. Massey dedicated many years of her life to bringing the peoples of Russia and the USA closer together, and played a prominent role in bringing about an end to the Cold War. In 2011, she converted to Orthodoxy, and in 2021 Russian President Vladimir V. Putin signed a Decree granting S. Massey Russian citizenship. In 2022 the American writer was awarded the badge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation "For Contribution to International Cooperation".
