Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira calls Orthodox Churches to assess antispiritual actions of Ukrainian authorities
DECR Communication Service, 29.03.2023.
On March 28, 2023, Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira and Antikythera, a hierarch of the Orthodox Church of Greece, made a statement in support of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He is convinced that those involved in the eviction of monastic community from the Kiev Lavra of the Caves will not escape punishment. He believes that contributing to this action is the anti-canonical “OCU hierarchy” supported by the Ukrainian state authorities, Orthodox Life website reports with reference to Vimaorthodoxias.gr.
Metropolitan Seraphim recalled the words of St. Paul: “He who is troubling you will bear justice, whoever he is” (Gal.5:10) and called persecution of two thousand monks of the Kiev Lavra of the Caves “cruel and merciless.” He underscored that these monks have restored and revived the shrines of the famous monastery so that it could “live, flourish and shine” as it had during the last ten centuries.
The archpastor called on the plenitude of Orthodoxy to assess the actions of Ukrainian authorities which have organized persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. “I express my ardent wish and hope that for the sake of the devout and faithful souls our Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece and other Local Autocephalous Orthodox Churches would take the correct stand and condemn these antispiritual actions,” said Metropolitan Seraphim in conclusion.
