Holy Synod establishes impossibility of commemorating new Primate of the Church of Cyprus
DECR Communication Service, 16.03.2023
On 16th March 2023, the Holy Synod members gave consideration to repercussions of the commemoration by the new Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus of the head of a schismatic body acting in Ukraine.
Earlier, at its session held on 20th November 2020 (Minutes No. 77), the Holy Synod established the impossibility of commemorating the name of Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus in the diptychs, as well as of the prayerful and Eucharistic communion with him in view of his decision to recognise one of the schismatic groups in Ukraine and commemorate its head among the Primates of the autocephalous Churches. At that same meeting, the Synod pointed out the impossibility of concelebrating with those hierarchs of the Church of Cyprus who would enter into ecclesiastical communion with representatives of the Ukrainian schism. On 7th November 2022, Archbishop Chrysostomos passed away in the Lord. The new Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus has continued commemorating the leader of the Ukrainian schismatics.
For this reason, the Holy Synod stated the impossibility of commemorating the name of Archbishop George of New Justiniana and All Cyprus in the diptychs and of maintaining prayerful and Eucharistic communion with him, as well as with those hierarchs of the Church of Cyprus who had entered into ecclesiastical communion with the schismatics or would do so in the future (Minutes No. 14).
