Commemorative events held in Turkey to mark the 102nd anniversary of the Russian exodus

On November 19, to mark the 102nd anniversary of the exodus of solders of General Pyotr Wrangle’s Russian army the office for the dead was said by Rev. George Sergeyev, who is in charge of pastoral care for the faithful of the Moscow Patriarchate in Turkey, at the church of Sts Constantine and Helen located in the summer residence of the Russian Federation General Consulate in Istanbul.
The service for the repose of the soldiers’ souls was attended by compatriots residing on banks of the Bosporus.
On November 22, Rev. George Sergeyev said the office for the dead in Gallipoli (Gelibolu today).
Present at the service were Mr. Roman Penkin, deputy head of the Tukey Representation of Rossotrudnichestvo (Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation), as well as Russian diplomats and Mr Erol Ugurlu, President of the Russia-Turkey Friendship Association. Participants in the mourning ceremony laid flowers at the memorial to Russian soldiers. After the service, participants in the event met with Gelibolu’s Mayor Mustafa Osacar and Prefect of Gelibolu district Bekir Abaci.

In 1920-1921, the units of General Pyotr Wrangel’s Russian Army, which had been evacuated from Crimea. settled on the Gallipoli Peninsula. On November 22, 1921, a Society of Gallipolians was formed to become one of the active public organizations of the Russian diaspora.
