Festive divine service celebrated on Pentecost Sunday at St. Nichols church in Shanghai
On June 20, 2021, the Orthodox community in Shanghai solemnly celebrated the day of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost).
The festive matins and the Divine Liturgy were celebrated by Rev. Ioann Schelokov. The church facility leased by the Shanghai municipal authorities was carefully adorned by parishioners for the occasion.
The church of St. Nichols was built in Shanghai in 1932-1934 with the funds collected by Russian emigres. In 1956, it was transferred to the Chinese Autonomous Orthodox Church. It was closed during ‘the cultural revolution’ and was misused in Shanghai (it accommodated a storehouse and a restaurant). Since 2010, the Shanghai authorities have leased the church facility to the Orthodox community in Shanghai for one-time divine services. At present, after a reconstruction the church building accommodates a bookshop.
