His Holiness Patriarch Kirill expresses condolences over the explosion at a Coptic Church in Alexandria
His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia sends the following condolences to the Patriarch of the Coptic Church, Shenouda III, over the explosion that happened at a Coptic church in Alexandria on the New Year night:
To His Holiness Shenouda III
Pope of Alexandria
Patriarch of the Throne of St. Mark in All Africa and the Middle East
Your Holiness,
With heavy hearts we have learnt about the explosion that has taken away over twenty human lives during the New Year night at the Coptic church of All Saints in Alexandria.
In spite of the measures taken by the Egyptian Government, the terrorists have managed to carry out their plan. As a result among those who are killed are not only parishioners of the Coptic church but also policemen who are Muslim. Today hundreds of people throughout the world become victims of international terrorism which seeks to use religious differences for their own purposes. The real designs of these villains have nothing to do with religion and are aimed only at achieving political goals.
The faithful of the Russian Orthodox Church share the suffering of Coptic Christians. I hope that those who have perpetrated this terrorist action will be found and will suffer a just punishment. I pray for peace and civil accord in Egypt and for the consolation of those who grieve.
With love in Christ,
+ Kirill
