Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk’s new book to be presented in Moscow
On July 22, 2016, the new book by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk “The Beginning of the Gospel” will be presented at the assembly hall of the Ss Cyril and Methodius Institute of Post-Graduate Studies. It is the first book in the series of six volumes collectively entitles “Jesus Christ. Life and Teaching”.
The series is biographical since it focuses on the human story of Jesus Christ. The author seeks to reconstruct the living image of Jesus on the basis of sources and to present His teaching as it is reflected in the Gospels. Special attention in the first book of the series is given to His character traits and worldview and the peculiarities of His ways of communication with people.
The book “The Beginning of the Gospel” is opened with an introduction devoted to the major areas of the New Testaments research today. The author makes a critical assessment of the search for “historical Jesus” outside the church tradition and offers his own method of research into the Gospels, which is then consistently applied in the sections on the initial chapters of the four Gospels. Difficult questions of the Bible studies, including the so-called contradictions in the Gospels, are not passed over in silence but on the contrary consistently and thoroughly analyzed.
The series “Jesus Christ. Life and Teaching” will be continued by the following books: “Sermon on the Mount”, “Miracles of Jesus”, “Parables of Jesus”, “The Lamb of God. Jesus in the Gospel of John”, “Death and Resurrection”. The monumental six-volume work is called to give answers to the principal questions about Jesus Christ: “What is it thatJesus has brought to people and why the modern man needs Him? Two thousand years have elapsed since the time in which He lived and taught: why is His image and preaching are still relevant? What is it that Jesus can give us as people living in the 21st century with all its complexities, challenges, problems and tragedies?”
In the book, there are 800 pages, over 300 illustrations and over a thousand and a half references to Holy Scriptures. It is supplied with an index of Bible quotations and an index of names.
The presentation of the book will be attended by:
