From March 18-20, 2019, the annual Lenten assembly of the diocesan clergy was held at the Cathedral of the Protection of the Mother of God in Des Plaines, Chicago, Illinois. It was chaired by Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America. This year, along with urgent diocesan concerns, the clergy touched on the problem of Ukraine and relationships between Orthodox Churches.
The assembly adopted a Resolution of March 20, 2019, in which the clergy of the ROCOR diocese of Chicago and Mid-America expressed, among other things, their concern for the church conflict in Ukraine, condemned the persecution of the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and assured His Beatitude Onuphry, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine, and his flock of their of their support and prayer during the time of tribulation for the Church. The resolution is published on the official site of the ROCOR diocese of Chicago and Mid-America.
The clergy stated that the church conflict in Ukraine violated peace and unity of the world Orthodoxy and expressed hope for the restoration of peaceful relations among all the Orthodox Churches: ‘We as clergy lament the conflict in Ukraine. We express our sorrow over the resulting suspension of concelebration with the Church of Constantinople. At the same time, we fully support the decision of our hierarchs in this regard. We pray that our Lord Jesus Christ will grant peace and unity to His Church. We are confident that with the help of the Holy Spirit, our hierarchs will continue to guide the Church aright <…> We continue to value our fraternal relations with all Orthodox Christians and we look forward to the restoration of normal ecclesiastical relations’.
