On 26th November 2019, a delegation consisting of hierarchs, abbots, hegumens, hegumennesses, monks and nuns of the Russian Orthodox Church from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and other countries arrived in Cyprus to take part in the International Conference on Monasticism and Today’s World.
At the Larnaka Airport the delegation was met by Metropolitan Isaias of Tamassos and Oreini.
On the first day the delegation members visited the Church of the Holy Righteous Lazarus in Larnaka, where they were greeted by Metropolitan Nektarios of Kition and Archpriest Spyridon Stavri, rector of the church. The participants in the conference venerated the holy relics of the first Bishop of Cyprus, saw the tomb of the saint, and were shown around St. Lazarus Byzantine Museum located in the territory of the church.
After the excursion the delegation was welcomed by Metropolitan Isaias of Tamassos and Oreini. He said he would like to express support for the Russian Orthodox Church on behalf of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus not in prayer and word only, but also in deed. One of the organizers of the conference was the Monastery of the Kykkos Icon of the Mother of God. The participants in the forum will discuss many important issues that might help Christians all over the world find the right path of spiritual life in today’s world, Metropolitan Isaias noted and added that monasticism has always been a guide for church people.
Metropolitan Arseny of Svyatogorsk, vicar of the Donetsk diocese, abbot of the Svyatogorsk Lavra of the Holy Dormition, greeted all those present on behalf of the Russian Orthodox Church, saying in particular: “We are beyond any political divisions, because we are the children of the One Heavenly Father and are united by the spirit of Christ’s love.”
Metropolitan Nektarios of Kition said in response that every visit of brothers from the Russian Orthodox Church and from other Orthodox Churches to the land of Cyprus brings great joy and consolation.
After the meeting the delegation members departed for Nicosia.
