Exhibition on the Shroud of Turin opens in Karaganda with participation of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District

On the 23rd of August 2026, an exhibition dedicated to the Shroud of Turin opened at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. The exhibition was organised by the Metropolitan District of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Diocese of Karaganda of the Roman Catholic Church, jointly with the Sovereign Order of Malta and the international charitable foundation Kirche in Not (“Aid to the Church in Need”).

Representatives of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District attended the opening ceremony: Hieromonk Dimitry (Baidek), Secretary to the Metropolitan; Archpriest Dimitry Patrikeyev, Secretary of the Diocese of Karaganda; and Priest Vyacheslav Shkuropat, Head of the Missionary Department of the Diocese of Karaganda. The Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate was represented by M.B. Nelyubova. The Roman Catholic Church was represented by Bishop Adelio Dell’Oro; Auxiliary Bishop Yevgeny Zinkovsky of the Diocese of Karaganda; and clergy of the diocese. P.V. Gumenyuk, Head of the Russia, Central Asia and Caucasus Department of Kirche in Not, represented the foundation. Representatives of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims, the city administration and public organisations were also among those attending the opening.

The exhibition features an exact full-size replica of the Shroud of Turin, as well as reconstructed instruments of torture to which the Lord Jesus Christ was subjected on the day of His execution, including a spear, a scourge, a crown of thorns, nails and others. The information presented on the exhibition panels provides a detailed account of the history of the Shroud and the numerous scientific studies conducted to determine its authenticity.

In a message of greeting from Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan read out at the ceremony, it was noted that holding the “Shroud of Turin” Exhibition in Karaganda and other cities of the country would be “of great significance for the development of interfaith and intercultural dialogue and would serve the noble cause of strengthening peace and harmony in society.”
