Commemoration day of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco celebrated at Moscow Metochion of Orthodox Church in America







On 2nd July 2025, the celebrations marking the commemoration day of St. John the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco, took place at the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine in-the-Fields – Moscow Metochion of the Orthodox Church in America.
Bishop Serafim of Istra, vicar of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’, officiated at the Divine Liturgy. Concelebrating with him were Archimandrite Seraphim (Shemyatovsky), representative of the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia to the Moscow Patriarchal Throne, rector of St. Nicholas Church in Kotelniki; Archpriest Daniel Andrejuk, representative of the Orthodox Church in America to the Moscow Patriarchal Throne, rector of the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine in-the-Fields; Archpriest Igor Yakimchuk, deputy chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, rector of the Holy Resurrection Church in Danilovskaya Sloboda; Archpriest Christopher Hill, cleric of St. Catherine Church; Priests Afanasy Ogeruk and Ioann Denisov; as well as Hierodeacon Afanasy (Suprun) and Deacon Mikhail Goroyan.
The choir of St. Catherine Church conducted by Vera Anrejuk performed the liturgical hymns.
After the Gospel reading, Bishop Serafim delivered a homily, website of the Metochion reports.
During the Liturgy, prayers were said for the repose of the souls of Metropolitan Anthony, St. John’s spiritual father, and his parents – Boris and Glafira Maximovitch.
After the Prayer Behind the Ambo, prayers of praise were offered to St. John of Shanghai, along with the troparion and kontakion to the saint.
After the dismissal, “Many Years” was sung to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ and His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of All America and Canada.
Archpriest Daniel Andrejuk asked Bishop Serafim of Istra to convey his heartfelt gratitude to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ for his loving attention to the Church of St. Catherine – Moscow Metochion of the Orthodox Church in America.
Bishop Serafim warmly thanked Archpriest Daniel for the joy of con-celebration and congratulated the clergy, parishioners and pilgrims on the commemoration day of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco.
The Divine Liturgy was followed by a festive repast in the churchyard.
