Obituary for Mr Leonid Bulygin, an oldest DECR staff member

Mr Leonid Anatolyevich Bulygin, one of the oldest staff members of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, passed away on the 19th of March 2024. More than 40 years of his life, from 1973 to 2017, had been devoted to zealous work in the area of external church relations.
Mr Bulygin was born in the city of Rybinsk on the 10th of January 1940.
In 1970, he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Academy with the Candidate of Theology degree, and in 1974 he completed his postgraduate studies programme at the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1973, Mr Bulygin was appointed secretary to the DECR deputy chairman. For many decades, he carried out his demanding and important work in the DECR Protocol Service. His modesty, goodwill and willingness to help others gained him respect of the DECR chairmen and staff members.
For commitment to his duties, Mr Leonid Bulygin was commended by the Supreme Authority. In 1977, 2000 and 2006, he received Patriarchal Letters of Commendation. Mr Bulygin was also awarded the Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh, 3rd class, in 1980, and 2nd class in 1986, the Order of the Holy Prince Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles, 3rd class, in 1989, and the Order of the Holy Right-Believing Prince Daniel of Moscow, 3rd class, in 1996. He also received the Medal in Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow.
Mr Leonid Bulygin was buried in the Laykovskoye Cemetery in Moscow.
