DECR Communication Service, 23.01.2024.
On January 22, a meeting of the “History and Practice of Missions” section was held at the Historical, Cultural and Educational Center “Sobornaya Palata” (Cathedral Chamber) in Moscow as part of the 33rd Annual Theological Conference of St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University for the Humanities (PSTGU).
Discussed at the section chaired by the PSTGU Prof. Andrei Yefimov were issues pertaining to history, philosophical and theological understanding of mission, and the practical realization of missionary projects. By tradition, taking part in the conference were scholars, clergymen involved in missionary work, representatives of Orthodox educational institutions, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Synodal Missionary Department. Also attending the meeting were representatives from Georgia, Spain, and Italy.
At the beginning of the meeting, Metropolitan Nikoloz of Akhalkalaki, Kumordo and Kars delivered an address entitled “Missiology of Father Seraphim Rose.”
On the same day, the hierarch of the Georgian Church met with the first-year postgraduate students at the Sretensky Theological Academy. He talked with them about Gospel motives in the creative work of Andrei Tarkovsky. In particular, he made a point of the interpretation of the Parable of the Prodigal Son in ‘Solaris’ motion picture.
Also, Bishop Nikoloz answered questions from students about cinema in general and how to preach with the help of art, including cinematography.
