The Basis of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church translated into Chinese

The Chinese Patriarchal Metochion has published the Chinese version of “The Basis of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church.” The translation was made by a group of Russian and Chinese translators.

The document, which was adopted at the Jubilee Bishops’ Council in 2000, sets forth church provisions on church-society and church-state relations and a number of problems socially significant at present. It is the first structured position paper on social teaching of the Orthodox Church.

The translation may be called unique for several reasons. Much attention was paid to theological terms, which are translated into Chinese for the first time. This can be explained by the fact that the Chinese Orthodox terminology is being formed anew. All concerned people from academic and Christian communities are usually involved in translation process. The quotations from the Holy Scripture were taken from the modern Protestant edition known as 和合本修订版. Certain quotations were revised and enlarged in accord with Orthodox tradition of the present day. The translation is appended by explanatory notes that include short comments and the list of personal names, website of the Chinese Patriarchal Metochion reports.

The book in a bilingual format has been published with assistance of the Foundation for Support of Christian Culture and Heritage.
