On behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and on my behalf I extend to you our deepest condolences over the demise of Archbishop Abune Aregawi of Dire Dawa and Djibouti Diocese, head of the Foreign Relations Department of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.
The departed archpastor worked zealously for the good of Christians in Ethiopia and did much for their church unity. For many years, His Eminence represented the Ethiopian Church in the World Council of Church and a number of other international organisations, and took part in the work of other bodies acting under the Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Churches. Archbishop Abune Aregawi, who repeatedly accompanied Your Holiness on your Patriarchal visits to other countries, including your historic visit to Russia on May 15-20, 2018, was a friend of the Moscow Patriarchate and supported active progress in the work of the Commission for Dialogue between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. We will cherish our warmest memories of him.
May the Merciful Lord receive His faithful servant in the dwellings of the righteous and vouchsafe his soul the joy of entering into his rest (Heb 4:1).
