A street near St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York is named in honour of Patriarch Tikhon
DECR Communication Service, 10.10.2022.
On October 7, which marks the 228th anniversary of the establishment of an Orthodox mission in North America in 1794, ‘Saint Tikhon Way’ road sign was set up at the junction of Madison Avenue and East 97th Street in Manhattan, New York, where St. Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral is located, with the blessing of Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, acting administrator of the Patriarchal parishes in the USA. Taking part in the ceremony were clergymen of the Patriarchal parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and leaders and partners of the Russian American Cultural Heritage Center.
According to the Patriarchal parishes in the USA, the decision of the New York City authorities to name a part of the street in honour of Patriarch Tikhon, who built and consecrated St. Nicholas Cathedral in 1902, has become a result of the work having been done by clergymen, parishioners, religious and pubic organizations during ten years. His Grace Justinian, the administrator of the Patriarchal parishes in the USA from 2010 to 2014, now Archbishop of Elista and Kalmykia, was an initiator and the first head of the working group.
On Sunday, October 9, the day of St. Tikhon's canonization in 1989, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated at St. Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral in New York with many people in attendance who heard the news of Saint Tikhon Way after the service.
Hegumen Nikodim (Balyasnikov), secretary to the administrator of the Patriarchal parishes in the USA, expressed deep gratitude to Ms Olga S. Zatsepina, the head of the Russian American Cultural Heritage Center for invaluable assistance in the work with the city authorities and presented her with a church award with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Ms Zatsepina said that she takes this medal as an award of all those who have worked for the perpetuation of the memory of St. Tikhon, including parishioners, the youth organization of the Patriarchal parishes in the USA, representatives of local religious and public organizations, members of the New York State Assembly, and business community of New York who have endorsed the Russian Orthodox Church’s initiative by official letters.
The Divine service ended with the glorification to St. Tikhon and the singing of Many Years to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, the New York City authorities, and all those who have worked for the good of the Holy Church.
