His Holiness Patriarch Kirill presides at a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church

On 23rd September 2021, in the Throne Hall of the Patriarchal and Synodal residence at St. Daniel’s Monastery in Moscow, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church began its session under the chairmanship of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

Greeting the assembled hierarchs, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church noted that among the items on the meeting agenda would be the preparation for the Bishops’ Council of 2021.

“Today we will discuss a whole range of issues pertaining, as usual, to the internal and external activities of the Church; relevant reports will be presented by several members of the Holy Synod,” His Holiness said and added that the Synod would also “consider candidacy of one of the persons recommended for episcopal consecration.”

The list of permanent members of the Holy Synod includes: Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine; Metropolitan Vladimir of Chisinau and All Moldova; Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, head of the Metropolitan area in the Republic of Kazakhstan; Metropolitan Vikenty of Tashkent and Uzbekistan, head of the Metropolitan area of Central Asia; Metropolitan Varsonofy of St. Petersburg and Ladoga; Metropolitan Pavel of Krutitsy and Kolomna; Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations; Metropolitan Veniamin of Minsk and Zaslavsk, Patriarchal Exarch for All Belarus; and Metropolitan Dionisy of Voskresensk, chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Taking part in the meeting are also temporary members of the Holy Synod, namely Metropolitan Yevgeny of Tallinn and All Estonia, Metropolitan Feodor of Volgograd and Kamyshin, Metropolitan Alexy of Chelyabinsk and Miass, Archbishop Nikanor of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and the Kurils, and Bishop Siluan of Lyskovo and Lukoyanov.
