Archbishop's Hilarion new symphony due to be performed at the Column Hall of the House of Unions
On 12 November 2009, the "Country of Resurrection" Musical Festival held in the framework of "The Orthodox Russia" exhibition will be closed by a concerts performing at which the Tchaikovsky State Academic Large Symphony Orchestra, the Choir of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the St. Petersburg Russian Capella. The programme includes pieces by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Sergei Rachmaninov.
The last piece to be performed is 'A Song of Ascents" Symphony for choir and orchestra by Archbishop Hilarion (Alfeyev).
The author composed the symphony in Finland in 2008 on the texts of seven selected psalms, two of which are known as "A Song of Ascents." Hence the title of the symphony of five parts, each with the drama of its own.
The symphony has been composed for mixed choir singing with accompaniment of a large orchestra that includes the stringed, wood, brass, and percussion instruments, harp, and organ.
