Chinese versions of Orthodox books presented at Beijing Book Fair
A round-table conference on The Russian Book in China: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow took place at the International Book Fair held in Beijing from August 29 to September 2, 2012.
The conference was held by G. Gupalo, editor-in-chief of the Dar (Gift) Publishers, Archpriest Dionysiy Pozdnyaev, rector of the Parish of Sts Peter and Paul in Hong Kong, and Prof. Zhan Bai-Chung, Beijing Pedagogical University.
They discussed various aspects of the history of the Russian book in China including its original period of cooperation between Russia and China under the Ging Dynasty, the publication of Russian books by the Peking Mission and the publication of works by Russian sinologists in China.
They also dealt with little researched period of publications by Russian emigres in Beijing, Harbin and Shanghai in the period from the last century 20s to the 40s and the mutual influence of Chinese and Russian cultures reflected in the literary works of Russian emigres in China.
The conference participants focused on problems involved in the modern translations of Russian books into Chinese, the tendencies in book publishing industry and in the interests of Chinese readers today.
Special attention was given to the Chinese versions of Russian books introducing the reader to Orthodoxy. Books published by the Orthodox parish in Hong Kong were presented. The participants in the conference and Book Fair visitors were also presented with scores of titles which can be of interest to a wide range of Chinese readers and which meet the academic requirements of Chinese scholars, the website of the Voskresenie Association of Russian Culture reports.
