On 10 May 2015, the 5th Sunday after Pascha, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.
Concelebrating with His Holiness were: Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations; Bishop Savva of Voskresensk, first deputy chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate; archpriest Mikhail Ryazantsev, sacristan of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour; and the Moscow clergy.
May 2015 marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. During the Liturgy, the Choir of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, conducted by Ilya Tolkachev, sang liturgical hymns set to Tchaikovsky’s musical composition “Liturgy of St John Chrysostom”.
“Liturgy of St John Chrysostom” was performed in compliance with the text to be included in the Complete Works by Tchaikovsky. The text was proofread to comply with the composer’s manuscript and the authorized editions published in Tchaikovsky’s lifetime. Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk acts as science editor of the volume containing the “Liturgy of St John Chrysostom”. Among the members of the editorial board is Mr. Vladimir Fedoseyev, artistic director and chief conductor of the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra.
After the Litany of Fervent Supplication the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church said a prayer for peace in Ukraine.
After the Liturgy His Holiness Patriarch Kirill addressed the worshippers with his Primatial homily.
Later the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church attended a concert which took place at the square before the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and was dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the birth of Tchaikovsky and the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
