DECR chairman takes part in international conference dedicated to theological heritage of Vladimir Lossky
On 29 November 2018, an international theological conference dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the death of Vladimir Lossky (1903-1958), prominent Russian theologian, took place at the Religious and Cultural Orthodox Centre in Paris. The meeting was organized by the Korsun diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
Among those who participated in the conference were representatives of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies, the Moscow Theological Academy, Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of Humanities, and St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris.
Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, rector of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Theological Institute of Postgraduate Studies, addressed the delegates and guests of the conference with a speech of greetings.
“When the question arises as to the significance of the heritage of Vladimir Lossky, we can highlight two areas in which it is of value: the first is the importance of his works for the Western world, and the second – for our homeland. By force of circumstance Vladimir Nikolayevich Lossky was to bear witness to the Orthodoxy, first of all, in the Western world. He wrote in the French language, and the Russian readers know his works in translations. His keen interest in the Fathers, in the mystical side of the Orthodox theology as opposed to the scholastic tradition was very important for a Western reader, to whom he could clearly explain the essence of the Orthodox theology,” Metropolitan Hilarion said in his speech, emphasizing the importance of bearing witness to the Orthodoxy both in the West and in Russia these days.
