Money being collected at Russian churches to help victims of Syrian war
The fund-raising campaign is still under way all over Russia to help those affected by the armed conflict in Syria. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service is coordinating the fund-raising campaign and has collected 7 million 155 thousand rubles as of July 2. Among those transferring money are dioceses, monasteries, churches and individuals.
“I am surprised at the amount of money we collected in our church last Sunday,” Rev. Vladimir Vigiliansky, rector of the Moscow Church of St Tatiana, said. “It is a very good result – to collect 50 thousand rubles in one Sunday, given that it is summer and we do not have many parishioners. It is more than what we collected for the needy in Greece. We have decided to carry out another fund-raising next Sunday. Surely, we have received such a good response thanks to the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill which was very convincing.”
The fund-raising campaign is over in the Rostov-on-Don diocese. Rev. Yevgeny Osyak, head of the Social Department of the Rostov-on-Don diocese, said, “As I know, people were eager to help not only because our Christian brothers suffered in Syria. If you only help some people, others will have to die. It is not right.”
According to the UN latest data, the number of victims of the civil war in Syria is over 90 thousand people; one million Syrian citizens left the country and became refugees; Syria lost 80 billion dollars in two war years. As Bishop Luke of Saydnaya of the Orthodox Church of Antioch said, nearly 140 thousand people were driven out of their houses, web-site of the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service reports.
