Synodal Biblical-Theological Commission meets for plenary session
DECR Communication Service, 20/02/2024
On 20th of February 2024, the Synodal Biblical-Theological Commission convened for remote plenary session. Presiding over the meeting was its chairman, Metropolitan Hilarion of Budapest and Hungary.
The main item on the agenda was Declaration Fiducia Supplicans adopted by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Roman Catholic Church, patriarchia.ru reports. The Declaration, signed by Cardinal Manuel Fernández, Dicastery Prefect, and Armando Matteo, Secretary for the Doctrinal Section, was approved and signed by Pope Francis to be published on the Vatican official websites on 18th of December 2023. Following its publication, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia instructed the Synodal Biblical-Theological Commission to analyse the document.
Metropolitan Hilarion opened the meeting, highlighting the Commission’s current agenda and tasks to be tackled by the plenum.
The participants in the meeting shared their views on theology behind the Declaration Fiducia Supplicans, pointing out that it is the first ever document in the history of the Catholic Church which gives form to the blessing of “same-sex unions.” The Commission members were unanimous that this innovation manifests a sharp deviation from the Christian moral teaching.
The Synodal Biblical-Theological Commission will submit its conclusions on the issue to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia for consideration.
