Missionary monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church opened in Incheon, South Korea

On 18^th January 2024, the eve of the Theophany, a new missionary monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Diocese of Korea opened in the city of Incheon, South Korea.

The monastery, located on Yeongjong island, was established by Archbishop Theophan of Korea and Hierodeacon Nektary (Lim), who had rented a private house for that purpose and set up a container house close by, transforming it into a church dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great, one of the fathers of Christian monasticism.

“This day marks the foundation of our abode. By the mercy of God, we have celebrated Vespers and the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great, along with the Great Blessing of Waters. We even welcomed our first parishioners who partook of the Holy Mysteries,” Archbishop Theophan wrote in Monastery from scratch Telegram channel on 18^th January.

Several families from among the Korea Diocese parishioners reside on Yeongjong island. As Archbishop Theophan noted, before the monastery opened, “it would take them an hour and a half or even two hours to travel by public transport to Seoul to get to church. As soon as they learned that they now had a place of worship nearby, they hastened to the church.”

As His Eminence explained, the reason for opening the monastery was that “all clerics currently serving serving in the Republic of Korea within the Russian Orthodox Church’s Diocese of Korea are monks – a hierarch, two hieromonks and one hierodeacon.”
