The great consecration of the church took place on July 28, 2023, commemoration day of the Holy Grand Prince Vladimir, Equal-to-the-Apostles, Baptizer of Rus’. The celebrations that day were led by Metropolitan Sergiy of Singapore and South-East Asia. Among his concelebrants were Bishop Pitirim of Jakarta and clergymen of the Singapore Diocese.
St. Vladimir’s Church was built thanks to donations from Orthodox Christians from Russia, Ukraine and Indonesia. The plot of land was a gift from an Indonesian lady in commemoration of her late husband Vladimir who had been born in Russia. The iconostasis, icon cases and church utensils were donated by Orthodox Christians from the Russian Federation.
The first parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church were opened in Indonesia a hundred years ago. In 2003, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, now Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’, visited the country. On becoming the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill continued to take care of the Orthodox communities in Indonesia. Over the past decades, Indonesia has become one of the centres of the Russian Orthodox presence in Asia, with 25 parishes carrying out their activities in the country. Serving in the local Orthodox communities are some 40 clerics, including readers, most of whom are Indonesian citizens.
