A representative of the Russian Orthodox Church visits Mozambique

On March 29-30, with the blessing of Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov), DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations, visited Mozambique.

Hieromonk Stephan met with the Catholic Archbishop of Maputo Francisco Chimoio. Bilateral cooperation and development of Russian educational projects in Mozambique had been discussed. The meeting was attended by Archbishop-Coadjutor João Carlos Hatoa Nunes.

On March 30 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Maputo, Hieromonk Stefan met with representatives of the Community of Sant'Egidio in Mozambique, priests Giorgio Ferretti and Rolando Curzi. The representatives of the Community showed a memorial exhibition on the visit of Pope Francis to Mozambique in 2019. The group also visited the hospital of the Community of Sant'Egidio which specialises in HIV care.

Father Stefan also met with S.B. Neskorozhenkov, Minister Counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Mozambique, and compatriots living in that country.

The trip was made jointly with a delegation of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and Russian universities. Within the framework of their visit to Mozambique members of the delegation visited state and educational institutions of the country, got acquainted with the work of higher and general educational institutions, discussed prospects of development of Russian educational projects and cooperation in the sphere of education.

Hieromonk Stefan took part in a meeting with compatriots of the Acting Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Public Relations of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation U. A. Rassoukhanov, Rector of Volgograd Socio-Pedagogical University A. M. Korotkov and Head of External Relations of the Federal State-Funded Educational Institution of Higher Education "Center for International Cooperation of the Russian Ministry of Education" A. G. Averkova. Development of Russian educational projects in the Republic of Mozambique was discussed at the meeting.
