An icon for War Memorial in Port Arthur in China consecrated in Moscow
The restored mosaic Icon of St. Nicholas the Miracle-Worker was consecrated on August 6, 2010, at the church of the Life-Giving Trinity on Sparrow Hills in Moscow.
The icon will be sent to China to be placed on the Great Reverence Cross in the Memorial to Russian and Soviet soldiers in Port Arthur. The cross 8 meters high is made of white marble. There is an inscription on its face side: ‘Eternal memory be to the valorous defenders of Port Arthur who gave their life for the Faith, Czar and Motherland. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (Jn. 15:13)’.
The Icon of St. Nicholas 27x40 cm in size was greatly damaged; most of the image was lost. It has been brought from Port Arthur to Moscow this summer and restored by artists Ulyana Marinina and Dmitry Letov.
The Russian Memorial in Port Arthur is the largest burial place for Russian citizens outside Russia. According to various data, from 15 to 50 thousand soldiers and civilians are buried there. It has an area of 4,8 hectares. The Memorial includes 1720 monuments, obelisks and sculptures. In September 2010, the Memorial will be restored fully and opened for the public.
