Primate of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria meets with rector of Moscow Theological schools

On 12 May 2019, His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa met with Archbishop Amvrosy of Vereya, rector of the Moscow Theological Academy who was on a pilgrimage to Egypt from May 6 to 12 with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia as head of a delegation of professors and students visiting the ancient holy sites.

Accompanying Archbishop Amvrosy were Rev. Viktor Kulaga, representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia to the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa; hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov), DECR secretary for inter-Christian relations; and hieromonk Daoud al-Antony of the Monastery of St. Anthony the Great.

His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II and the guests prayed at the Church of St. Mark in the Monastery of St. Sabbas.

After the Liturgy His Beatitude greeted Archbishop Amvrosy and mentioned his longtime friendship with His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. He continued to say that the Churches of Russia and Alexandria have always maintained close fraternal relations. ‘I would like to express profound gratitude to the Russian Orthodox Church for assistance she has always rendered to our Church and assure her that we will always be with you.’

The Primate of the Church of Alexandria asked hieromonk Daoud al-Antony to convey his greetings to His Holiness Patriarch Tawadros II of the Coptic Church and wished Archbishop Amvrosy and the Russian Orthodox Church success in her cooperation with the Coptic Church and other Churches throughout the world underscoring the importance of dialogue at the present day.

His Beatitude also dwelt on the inter-Orthodox relations, mentioning the recent meeting of the Patriarchs of Alexandria, Jerusalem and Antioch and the Archbishop of Cyprus who discussed the situation of Christians in the Middle East and to confirm canonical order of the Orthodox Church.

Archbishop Amvrosy exclaimed ‘Christ is Risen!’ and congratulated His Beatitude Theodoros II with the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing women. He said that it was a great honour and joy for himself and for the delegation to pray together with the Patriarch and reminded him of his visit to the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, saying that all people there were impressed by his charisma and still remember this meeting with feeling. As to the meeting in Cyprus which you mentioned, we welcome and support intention of heads of the Orthodox Churches to maintain canonical order in the Church and cherish Holy Tradition which is the foundation of our unity and of the truth in the life of the Church.

His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II and Archbishop Amvrosy continued their talk at the residence of the Patriarchs of Alexandria after visiting the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos.
