Archbishop Longin of Klin deceased in the Lord

On 25 August 2014, in Düsseldorf, Archbishop Longin of Klin, representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Germany, deceased in the Lord at the age of 68.

 

Archbishop Longin (Talypin) was born in Helsinki, Finland, on 17 February 1946.

On 1 April 1969, he took monastic vows. That same year, he was ordained hierodeacon on April 13, and hieromonk on May 18. Since 1969, he served as a priest of the Patriarchal community of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God in Helsinki.

In 1969, he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Seminary, having completed his extramural studies. In 1974, he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Academy as a Candidate of Theology.

In 1974, he was elevated to the rank of hegumen.

Since 17 November 1975, – professorial scholarship holder at the Chair of the History of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Since 1978, he served as rector of the Patriarchal community of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God in Helsinki.

Since 16 November 1979, he served as dean of the Diocese of Düsseldorf of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Exarchate of Central Europe.

On 3 December 1979, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite.

On 6 October 1981, the Holy Synod made a decision to appoint him bishop of Düsseldorf. On 11 October 1981, he was consecrated as bishop of Düsseldorf. Conducting the consecration were Metropolitan Philaret of Minsk and Slutsk, Metropolitan Augoustinos (Labardakis) of Germany (Patriarchate of Constantinople), Archbishop Melchizedek of Berlin, Archbishop Mikhail (Mudyugin) of Vologda and Veliky Ustyug, Bishop Lavrentije (Trifunović) (Serbian Patriarchate), and Bishop Anatoly of Ufa and Sterlitamak.

Archbishop Longin of Klin participated in the work of the World Council of Churches.

In 1989, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop.

On 1 October 1990, he became a member of the Synodal Commission for Reviving Religious and Moral Education and Charity.

Since 22 December 1992, he served as archbishop of Klin, vicar of the Moscow Diocese, rector of the Stavropegic Church of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God in Düsseldorf.

Since 22 February 1995, he was the head of the newly established Representation of the Russian Orthodox Church in Germany.

In 1999-2002, he was the head of the Permanent Delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church to the European Economic Community.
